How to Style Curly Hair at Home

Curly hair is lovely when it’s done right, but anybody who has ever tried to curl their hair and ended up with a frizzy, frumpy mess knows just how difficult it can sometimes be to achieve perfect curls that’ll last through the day. Before you give up on your dream of a beautiful head of curls, however, there are some surprisingly low-maintenance styling tips on how to style curly hair at home that you ought to be aware of.

For Naturally Curly Hair

If you already have naturally curly hair, you’re lucky! But of course, having naturally curly hair doesn’t mean you get to wash your hair, go to bed, and simply wake up with perfect curls. No…there are some steps you need to take to ensure that your curls retain their bounce and beauty without becoming frizzy or out of control.

For those with naturally curly hair, it all starts in the shower. Believe it or not, women with curly hair really shouldn’t be washing their hair daily; instead, it’s best to use a method known as co-washing, which involves going a few days without washing your hair and, when it comes time to cleanse, using a gentle cleansing conditioner that won’t strip your hair of the natural oils it needs for amazing curls.

Furthermore, when you get out of the shower, be sure to “plop” your hair instead of towel drying it. “Plopping” your hair refers to wrapping it in a terry cloth or similar material, allowing it to dry naturally without losing its curl definition. On the other hand, should use choose to blow dry your curly hair, always make sure you’re using a diffuser extension on your blow dryer; doing so will help to ensure that air is circulated through your curls, which will help to maintain their definition and reduce frizz.

For Other Hair Type

If you don’t have naturally curly hair, this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy low-maintenance curls! Whether your hair is naturally wavy or straight, there are some simple ways to achieve curls without even having the need for any styling tools, such as blow dryers and curling irons. The end result is less damage to your hair without sacrificing the curls you want!

One method of curling your hair without using heat that you may want to consider is that of the overnight curl method. With this method, the nice thing is that you get to go to bed with damp hair and wake up to a head of beautiful, defined curls with hardly any effort at all. When you get out of the shower, simply allow your hair to dry slightly (you can use a dryer for this or just let it air dry for a bit).

Once your hair is damp but not soaking wet, take out a headband and place it on your head as you normally would, except make sure the headband is placed entirely over your hair instead of under it in the back. Then, while your hair is still damp, liberally spray it with a high-hold hair spray. Next, working in sections (smaller sections for tighter curls and larger sections for looser ones), twist and wrap each individual section around the headband. If you have longer hair, you may need to wrap each section around the band a few times.

Continue wrapping each section until your entire head of hair is wrapped and in place within the headband. Finish with one more spritz of hairspray. Then, go on with your typical routine and leave your hair wrapped overnight. It’s okay if you mess it up a little in your sleep, so long as your hair stays mostly wrapped.

When you wake up, slowly and gently remove the headband from your head, unwrapping each section as you go. Once all sections are unwrapped, you’ll be left with beautiful curls that’ll hold in place all day long. Simply tousle them a little with your hands to get them just how you want them and you’re good to go!

Achieving beautiful curls doesn’t have to take a lot of time and effort on your part. By following these simple style tips for both curly and non-curly hair, you can enjoy lovely curls any day of the week!
