Knowing how to pin curl your hair is way easier than you might think!
What You’ll Need
Learning how to pin curl your hair is a breeze. All you need to get started is:
- lots of sturdy bobby pins
- a quality hair spray
- an old t-shirt or large silk rag
Start With Damp Hair
When pin curling your hair, it’s generally best to start with hair that’s slightly damp. You’ll achieve the best results if your hair is a little wet when you roll and pin your curls, as this will help them keep their old. On the other hand, you don’t want them to be soaking wet, because then your hair will still be damp when you remove the pins, and the curls won’t hold for long. This is especially important to keep in mind if you have thicker or longer hair that takes awhile to dry; if this applies to you, then start with hair that’s 80-90% dry already.
Twist and Pin
Now, it’s time to get to curling! Begin by working in small sections (between half an inch and an inch is ideal, depending on your hair length and thickness). If you have longer hair, you’ll probably want to work in thinner sections, and if you have thicker hair, you may want to start with the bottom layers and work your way up.
With each section, start by twirling your hair between your thumb and index finger from the bottom all the way up to the scalp. Once you reach the scalp, use one or two bobby pins to secure the curl in place as flat against the scalp as possible. Repeat these steps with each section of hair until your entire head is covered.
Set and Dry
Once you’re done creating your pin curls, you’ll want to give them plenty of time to set so they’ll hold properly. Spray liberally with a hair spray of your choice, then gently tie a cotton t-shirt or silk wrap around your scalp. This will allow you to sleep with your pin curls in overnight without them becoming dislodged or frizzy.
Remove and Tousle
When you wake up the next morning, remove the wrap from your head and then begin taking out the bobby pinned sections one by one, starting from the top layers of your hair and working your way to the bottom. At this point, your curls might look a bit sectioned off and crimped, so you’ll want to use your hands and fingers to gently tousle and curls until you achieve your desired look. Then, finish off with a little more hairspray for all-day hold, and you’re good to go!
Pin curls are a great way to get the curly look you want without using any heat on your hair in the process. Plus, the hold you get with the pin curl technique is incredibly long-lasting, so be sure to give this method a try for yourself!
